Title: Taito or Midway Space Invaders - which one do you prefer?
Post by: Superully on May 23, 2011, 01:15:33 PM

out of curiosity (and for some other reason ;)), which space invaders cabinet do you prefer and why: taito or midway style?

personally, i think the taito side- and frontart looks cooler (more space-ish), but i prefer the colorful midway bezel and the metallic overlay. as you can see, i'm somewhat torn ... ???

let me hear from you guys, please!

Very difficult!I like the art and colors of the midway version BUT the taito version is the original one, so i would go for that one if I had the choice.  But you can buy either one? I also NEED a Space Invaders!  ;D ;)

BTW they both have the moon background?

Looking at both , its a tough descision, but the midway one attracts me just a bit more..

Hmmmm, a tough choice.

I prefer the general look of the Taito cab, but it's looking a bit bulky. Maybe it would have been better with a slanted top like the Midway version.

However, since I'm a fan of joysticks above buttons, I'd go for the Taito one :)

Jep, that´s a tough one! - personally i would go for the TAITO one (because i all ready have the Midway version..  ;D ;) )

Pros:
The painted sideart and kickart on the Midway version rocks!

Cons:
I don´t like the "glossy" sticker sideart on the TAITO, and the bulky look

But yet again, it´s the owners/buyers decision on which he prefer...

there's also a taito version without a joystick, so that doesn't count as a pro ;D

tough choice indeed! somehow when i think of space invader cabs the first thing that comes to my mind is the midway version because it shows up more often!

The Zaccaria one of course, it looks far better than these. ;D ;D ;D

Even if I only played the midway back in the days, I much prefer the TAITO which is really attractive with its more detailed design, everything is fully decorated...
...and is the original versio, the one that started the craze in Japan!
+ it's also more difficult to find than the midway which makes it even more desirable.

Both have that fantastic backlit moon (and there is also a button version of the Taito but I like the Joystick version better).

Do I sound sure of myself?  ::) weeeelll, because to tell you the truth, I have the Taito version, the "The Invaders" Zacc version and if ever a nice midway version happens to cross my "arcade quest way" at some point, let me tell you that I won't turn it down  ;D
I would love to ultimately own all 3 versions and line them up because imho every serious gameroom needs a good amount of squid shaped invaders.

I knooooow
I will bring all my cabs to eurocade, we will build up a nice fire camp (NOT with the cabs!) and I will tell you all the fabulous stories of my roadtrips while you guys grill some marshmallows.
Does that count ?

Taito for sure. I just like the looks better. I'm not to keen of the white sections on the Midway.
Plus it has a joystick. (I still haven't seen a Taito with buttons...)

Another vote for the Taito!  It's the "original" version and I think the look of the Taito is a little more "timeless" looking versus Midway version.  And when it's lit up ...  ;D !

I also look at it sort of like collecting records - I like to collect LPs from the land of the band's origin, same with arcade games.

Here's mine:

Taito, another manufacturer can't embody the legendary history of this game.

In other words: if the taito one was _realy_ ugly (which it isn't ;-)  I'd still prefer it for the above reason alone.

And.....it's the better looking cab :-)

Please note, that if you suggest to buy the Taito for Ully, he will buy the Midway....... ;D ;D ;D

Space Invaders - Taito

there is no separate entry for it, only a description under the midway entry:

The Taito version of the game features a large, rectangular cabinet with blue and white sideart, and uses a joystick versus the button set-up on the Midway version. The marquee is also slightly different in terms of colour and prominently displays the "Taitronics" logo. The overall quality of the machine is arguably superior to the Midway version since its cabinet graphics are much more detailed.

obviously the panel has been hacked, because the text states that the taito version definitely uses a joystick!

strangely that flyer shows the cab with two buttons - contrary to what the klov text says. i'm somewhat puzzled ...

I seem to recall seeing some in the UK and Europe that had buttons (minus the red square!), so Taito may have made two versions.

Both are cool, I personally go with the Midway, because I clearly remember where (in pub inside a mall, close to my native house), and how (While my parents making purchases, they let me play on it inside that pub during the time of the shopping). The Taito looks gorgeous but don't bring me any memories...

Don't have the time to dig the pictures right now but I'm 100% positive there's a Taito version with buttons and another one with joystick.
Out of my head I'd say joystick where a bit more expensive to produce/maintain that's why they switched to buttons version.
I'll find some links tomorrow.
The red square is indeed a hack.

Title: Re: Taito or Midway Space Invaders - which one do you prefer?

nope - 456 euros for a game with a hacked control panel and no idea how the interior looks was too expensive for me - there will be other chances to get one in the future!

Yes, i'm sure there'll be. What do you think is a reasonable price for a space invaders? I personally would pay €300,- max.

agreed! space invaders show up for insane prices on ebay uk quite often (like most cab prices on ebay uk), but from time to time you can get them pretty cheap. i missed out on one last week which sold for around 170 pounds, i think that's a nice price!

i have to agree with andré, that cpo is indeed ugly.

btw, the cpo of the other taito cab was definitely hacked, the seller had sent me some pics which clearly showed that a piece of the plexi overlay had been cut out - ouch!!! :'(

Well you are right!! Zaccaria CPO is not very nice but its all i've got!!

it was made for Space invaders hack called Super Earth Invasion... not bad game actually

But I am after the original Taito CP, the jap one with the buttons..

You can find loads of Midway repros but not Tatio

The Taito CPO is reverse screened on plexi a-la Donkey Kong.  The purple/blue color also appears to have tiny metal flakes in it!

The source from joymonkey is cool, but its also a JPG, so that meand raster....

does not look too hard to vector though, but the silver particles mentioned above will be difficult i guess..

Personally I'd rather have a non-speckled CPO that looks like the original than the one is now on there...

I have the files on my HD, I'll check out what's there and in what size(s)... if Giddygoon is interested of course  ;D

Andre... I am interested in a scan of the CP... I also need to replace the bezel, you can't see it but there is a hair line scratch across the words Space Invaders.... Blast !!

A nice scan of both... I would really appreciate

Or better still originals spares of both if anybody has them for sale???
