Title: My first classic: Pacman !
Post by: valentin27 on June 01, 2013, 06:45:23 PM
Hi Everybody,

Today I got the first of the 3 classic arcades I am looking for : a 100% original Midway Pacman   :pac: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

I bought it from a retired pro who kept it for his children then stored it till last March when it appeared on Leboncoin. Price was crazy but after weeks of thinking he finally accepted my offer.

Unfortunately it is non-working. I don't want to start cosmetic restoration before it works (it is much less beautiful than on the pics).
Step 1: finding someone who can repair the PCB.

Do you know anyone able to repair it ?

Valentin

I can´t repair the pcb for you, but I want to congrqatulate you with your fist cab, a great one. What are your other two grails?

By the way, don´t fool yourself thinking that you can keep your collection to only three .....  :D

Who is the retired pro?

Thanks for the congrats ! But I have a lot to do to deserve it.
I am looking for a Breakout and a Space Invaders (Taito). Only 3 because I am more pinball oriented.

I do not the old name of this company - he stopped this job in the 80s.

One thing that your game is missing is the smoked plexiglass cover on top of the tube bezel.

Any idea where I could find it (original or repro) ?

No, just an old video poker without the poker PCB.
He stopped this job decades ago.

Very nice cab  :)

This is only in pics, the cab is nice but there is a lot of touch up to do.

What are the serial number ?

10637

With plexi it looks like this

Availiable on a web-shop ?

What is wrong with the pcb ?

I saw the game turned on only when I went to see it in March. There was nothing...
One of the big condo is explosed.
It didn't plug the arcade today because many fuses are not correct - I prefer to clean and replace the fuses before turning it on again.

Congrats, looks in very condition !!

You jump a bit too quick to the conclusion that it's the PCB. Do all the basic work first. Check fuses, power levels, monitor function etc.

If there's really an exploded cap I'd love to see a picture of that.

For a tinted plexi, look for a local perspex dealer. With the correct sizes they'll be able to sell you a perfect match for around €15, at least that's what I paid at my local dealer. Don't go too dark though, you'll have to "overdrive" your monitor if you choose too dark plexi.

Edit:   Found the plexi here : http://pac-man.com/pacman/upright/front/
Edit 2: Even cheaper here : http://www.arcadeshop.com/parts.htm#Bezels

OK whatever you do, remove that cap NOW...

The electrolytic stuff will eat your board !

Be sure to replace both caps. If one's gone, the other is not far from going too. These two are in parallel AFAIK.

About the tint: that's the hard part if you don't have an original to match it. I'd go a bit lighter rather than darker for the reason of having to "overdrive" the monitor with a really dark one.

I will remove them but still need a good technician for a complete review.

I will put correct fuses on monday (all the labels are here - it helps !).
Is there an article to check the different power levels ?

Found some pictures from my Galaxian perspex replacement.

I assume the tints are the same on Pac Man.

On the first pics you see the original plexi. It's really dark and has a smoke (brownish) like tint which i HATE. On the good side, that color is not available anymore (at least not from my local dealer). I don't like the colors of a game to be tinted so the "tint" I chose was color-less or "black/gray" if you want...

You can see I chose a lighter tint then the original. I might even go lighter today....not sure....

IMHO the dark tint of the plexis used on Pac, Ms.Pac etc is the cause for the immense burn that these monitors usually have (I know mine had !!) because they had to turn up the brightness so high. Remember the factories didn't need the games to last that long ;)

Immense burn in?! Where? Here is a picture of my tube:

Hardly any burn in.  ;D ;D ;D

Yes, I will replace my smoked plexiglasses bezels (PM, ms. PM, Galaga and Galaxian) also for less dark ones this week, although the new ones will be made from glass.

I might even go lighter today....not sure....

With the burn monitor, maybe not going to light... Best would be to find a perspex supplier and try different tint.
