Title: Crystal Castles Kickplate Artwork
Post by: Q*ris on January 23, 2011, 02:30:35 PM
Does somebody know where I could buy a good repro of the CC kickplate art (=2 stickers) ?
If not could somebody maybe scan this part on his cab and measure it for me please?
...so I could print it myself and make the high resolution files available for the community.
Thanks already!

The sideart is available at Zorgs Vectorlib

http://vectorlib.free.fr/CrystalCastles/ (http://vectorlib.free.fr/CrystalCastles/)

Maybe you can "steal" some parts for the repro out of that, that saves alot of work  ;)

Thanks Etienne, that's also an idea and I can make it super close to the original.
But I need the measures at least... Muerto? Time Pilot? Help needed here, my batsignal bentleysignal is on!

Excellent, thanks a lot!!!
I think I can scan the artwork from the manual and use some parts of the side art to re-make it.
I'll start working on that next week.

Whenever you have time just a front picture of the kickplate would be great so I can use it as a template to help me put everything in the right position.
No hurries though.
Many thanks for that!

a guy on KLOV had the same problem (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=156398&highlight=crystal+castles+sharpie). he used those fabulous sharpie pens to repaint each crystal individually - turned out G-R-E-A-T!!! if that were my CC, i'd touch the crystals up in a heartbeat as well, looks so much better in red!

Red is always the "mysterious"  color....

I'd almost say the one that's missing the red is either a screening error, or simply a difference.
BUT red is the color that always get's faded by (sun)light...

From my experience at work I'd say that yellow generally fades way faster then red, that's why I didn't even consider the red to have faded on TimePilots Crystal Castle. A look at my CD shelf backs this up as there are several CDs where the yellow color has faded and the red is still intact (on the small side of the inlay which is visible when you put a CD on a shelf).
Maybe screenprinting inks behave differently compared to offset printing inks, at least they are completely different anyway...
Anyway, time to break out the sharpie pen  ;D

Wow, thanks so much for noticing that, I'll make sure to make the red happen at the right places in my repro.
Really weird that the red didn't fade in Bentley's hat though...

It's a piece of plastic capable of providing silly noises. Actually they are trying to replace vinyl records and cassette tapes with it, but I don't think they will succeed  ;D

Looks great so far, thanks for that input!
But I wonder why he's using photoshop to do this kind of "geometrical" job... anyway it's the result that counts.
Keep us updated  ;)

He can just get things done quicker in Photoshop...  His work speaks for itself.

He finished it (ignore the black...  its not on the main file):

I don't want to be too anal, but that design looks just wrong in all kind of ways. The black lines are not evenly wide, the vertical lines aren't vertical at all in a lot of places, it looks more like an image made in Paint rather than in Photoshop.  :(

When I look at the picture of the original artwork above, all the lines seem perfectly even...

It's true that the lines of the labyrinth are not super even but mainly the resolution is 72DPI (not good enough for printing).
Thanks a lot for the effort and fast work though, way better than me sitting on my ass and waiting for things to happen!

Hey don't take it bad, I really really appreciate your generous help but just can't use a 72dpi file for a 55cmX70cm print.

Really,  How can I not?  How would you have taken it?

next time...  ask

Instead of attacking the work of someone that was doint it for me as a favor, remember that its a v1 and that he would have been more than happy to tweak it and probably make it available in a larger format/resolution...

We absolutely appriciate this kind of efforts, dont get us wrong.

Only thing is that if you want to print it, 72dpi will give this as a result:

So it needs to be 600 dpi or higher to get a decent print result. What looks great on screen, does not look good when you "blow it up"
Anyway, the only thing chris needs to do with this file is to convert it to vectors, wich basicly means drawing the complete art again in Illy..

and thats what he already is doing with the sources he got, so this was a great gesture, but the work he has afterall to make it suitable for use for printing is the same, so in that sence it is not suitable.

We do NOT say that he did not do a good job, it looks brilliant (on screen...)

Hey keep cool nobody was attacking the work here.  ???
Pointing out what could be corrected is exactly what I did so where's the problem? would you rather have me saying 'it's really perfect' and never use it?
Check Etienne's clear explanation above, it's just not possible to get a good result if you print the file as it is, it's just a fact.
...and again thank you very  very much for your help here, but if you can't take a little criticism please don't submit your work on a public forum.

Wow-wow-wow, guys don't let this get out of hands....

I've known Barry (well not in person, but it feels pretty close to it) for a long time, and he has gone through great lengths to help me with the hobby in various ways.

I also met Chris not too long ago and he also helped out a lot by offering to store the monitors from the group-buy and even bring them to The Netherlands for us. He also was a nice guy and fun to "talk arcade"  with...

So I like you guys both and I'm sure if you'd know each other you'd like each other as well..

Let me use a nice saying from France here: C’est le ton qui fait la musique... (and I think Barry's response was more aimed at McVenco's response in that sense).

I think everyone appreciates Barry's and his friends' try to help out (and this is mentioned) but I can also see that the work is of little use for this project.
It's a shame about the invested time, but better to be honest and clear about it before maybe even more work was put in...

So please guys, shake hands.
