The 2600 (NTSC) that I recently bought needs a video mod before I can even see if it works....hopefully will be done november the 2nd :

From what I've read on Atariage.com it's not ready yet but the current version of the Harmony can be upgraded to the Encore by sending it back.....not a great option for us overseas people...

I had no idea that the 2600-scene is still that busy :shock:
So Encore is a cartridge where you can play 2600 games from a SD-card?

freakin amazing. i will get such a device for my XL/XE. I never really owned an Atari 2600 back then. I stated with the Intellivision because of the amazing soccer game.
My friends all had 2600-units. But the Atari 600XL was my first real computer and I would love to play all that old stuff again.

However it is not as easy as with the 2600 because the A8 had cassettes, floppies -and- cartridge games so the formats can differ a bit.
I've been looking for exactly the same for a long time, I got the MyIDE cartridge which was developped by our good friend Mr.Atari but it is a bit too technical for me to handle.
The!cart looks easier to handle and has more lots more free memory (128Mb). That is probably not enough for ALL games ever made for the system, but you can for sure have the bulk of the best on there. Great thing is it also plays large homebrew games like Space Harrier.
Another big bonus for me : the Studio software runs on Windows, Linux AND Mac.
I'm planning to buy a The!cart too.....bring on the holidays ;)

simple, connect with USB to a pc and flash the bios
for the roms, just copy them to the SD card and instert that in the cartridge
insert cartridge in 2600, and have fun :D

How much for an NTSC mod and do they come with all The parts ?
@Etienne, I think Thorsten meant the The!Cart, not the Harmony.

The AV/S-video boards for 2600 are £30 each plus delivery and come as full kits
if you want them soldered then its £40 each plus delivery
7800 AV board NTSC only is £40 or soldered £50 each plus delivery
Pause mods are £20 or £25 soldered each plus delivery
I am working on tutorials in our forum and until they are complete and even after I supply full installation support to get it installed
the good thing about these is you don't need to remove any components, not even the RF unit (its optional) I do remove it.
the worst thing that you have to do an is fully reversible is lift a few pins on the TIA chip. NTSC is Pin 6, 9, 12 and 13... on PAL is 9 and 13

Damn, I am usually against price policing but that is a bit too much money for such a tiny PCB with few parts. I bought the console for about the same money...sorry just MHO.
By the way that website address on the PCBs doesn't exist.

Well... I was about to say "oh that's easy" but then I went and try to look into it and.....it's not _that_ easy, at least....well...
OK this is what I understand: you use the Studio software on your Mac, Linux machine or PC to create the flash file. Then you either need a SIO2PC connection (that means one of those SIO2USB or SIO2PC interfaces, or like I did, solder one simple chip inside your A8 machine and hook it to a standard RS-232 connector)) OR you need a SIO2SD "drive" to get the data across on the A8 and into the cartridge.
I think this is the bottleneck of the system. Not everyone has a SIO2PC connection on their A8 and if you already have SIO2SD why bother getting this cartridge ?
I asked this on the Atari age thread. A "competing" sytem from Atarimax uses a dedicated cable to program the flash cartridges directly from a PC. However these cartridges are 8Mb max which would really make you need quite a number of cartridges to get a reasonable amount of games, and that is expensive and also a lot of hassle.
If/when I understand the entire process I could fill one of those The!carts for you Thorsten because I already have one A8 machine with SIO2PC conenction. Let's see the answers on Atariage......

It does exist, ive just been on it.
I have 6 of these boards in 6 of my 2600's and they are very good quality and have never let me down. There is also an S-Vid mod that Sarj has done thats really good, I was shocked at the difference it made! Very impressive!

Im sticking with the classics at the moment, this month, MISSILE COMMAND!!!
Without doubt one of the best games on the 2600 and an all time arcade classic.
Rules stand as befor, photo's an youtube vid submissions are accepted and playing on Stella is allowed.
Difficulty A on the console and were sticking with Game 1 to keep it simple :)
