Title: Displaying hi-score in your game room?
Post by: DarthNuno on September 06, 2009, 09:23:23 PM
I really want to 'score' on my games... and I want to keep all my scores... and display them all the time in my game room!

I may use a black board, but ... for some reasons, I cannot find one  :-\

OK, let's look for something more sexy  ::)

I'm in touch with http://www.spotled.be for a display, this one for example :

+ : SIZE!!! One meter long for this one
- : PRICE !!!  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

...but I also have an other solution... A touchscreen LCD monitor fixed on a wall... it would be awesome, and I would allow me to do more than displaying score... for example : Jukebox player, Internet surfing... etc  :P

Ok,  even if I don't have yet a touchscreen monitor (they are available on ebay germany), let's start to work on the power point that will display the scores.

Sneak Preview :

Now in full screen ...

 :spaceace:

Few suggestions maybe?

How about the actual high score table from the game overlaid on the flyer or some game art, with the game art slightly opaque (transparent).

Oh my god i just look RIDICULOUS with my whiteboard

I don't even have a whiteboard, I have a big piece of paper (~A0 size) on my wall where I scribble down my high scores...

The touchscreen is a cool idea, you can have almost infinite display options with such a thing. With the led thing your options are of course more limited. It's up to you if you want fancy stuff or not ;D I vote for the touchscreen!

why not an LCD TV,

i mean they are getting cheaper every day
there are lCD TV's with 37" (94 cm) diagonal for like € 550,- out there (http://www.coolsound.nl/product/13618/sharp_lc_37d44e)

do you really need the touchscreen function if its for display purposes ?

Or less fancy than electronic schoolboardpaint (http://catalog.painelearning.com/crafty_dab_school_board_paint-p-117085.html)  ;D

I used that on my closetdoor when i was a child.

That is a fantastic idea !!! Looks great.

How much are those touchscreens ?

If you go for LEDs this would be nice to hang around your gameroom:

Well, a nice touchscreen is starting at  300€ (see here on ebay.de (http://computer.shop.ebay.de/Monitore-Flachbildschirme-/162497/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A1229&_nkw=touchscreen&_catref=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=3&_sc=1)).

The price for this led display

... is 439€ without taxes  :?

In the first step, I'll only use a simple TFT monitor (the one I use for doing my powerpoint)... and like Etienne says, LCD TV are getting cheaper every day...

I'll finish the presentation first, put that monitor on location, and see how it looks in the game room  8)

Why not buy an old Photo Play for this ? Get's you the monitor (OK CRT, but that fits great in the "scene"), the touch-screen and a PC :D

I wonder if there is a way to automate this, possibly using SQL, or something of that sort, for twin galaxys and for mame people some sort of API to tap into mame and pull the scores of specified games (and overlay them on that games artwork)

I have this thing for Highscores  ::)

What if there was a Highscore database online, where you could enter your scores, and with an open API so that the different gamesites around the net could make "localized" versions for there games and in the sameway you could make a personallist to display in your game rooom?

If there where a gamemeeting/event or something, you just pick the games played, the players and you could generate an event highscore. This would also let you compare scores between events, compare your game room to world records etc etc.

We've had some ideas about it in sweden (at Arkadtorget.se) and we think we need a list of arcade games (there is a PCB DB being made in Japan, there is Klov and there is the list from Mame).

Something to tie things together and still with an open solution thingy so that you could make the highscore lists you like..

Does that sound like something you like?

Maybe I should put my word where my mouth is and try to build a prototype to show off  :!:

Got some interesting stuffs last week, in a German shop (but located in Luxembourg) called Hornbach :

It seems to be the perfect thing for me ... it's a magnet panel, but you can also write on it with a special pen. Got three, from various colors, because the shop has the v1 + v2 colors : Blue & Orange  :P :-*

On location :

And the location for the black one  ;)

i've been following the thread on klov and i have been looking for letterboards like that for quite a while now, but either they are extremely small or they don't exist at all. obviously, they weren't used that often in germany like they still are in the usa - pretty rare item over here, and EXPENSIVE! this would be one of those items where i was hoping for the THREE BIG Cs - Cheap Chinese Crap ;)!!!

Hah, well it does give me an "old-fashion" feeling though, because this is EXACTLY what they had in our local cafeteria to put up the prices of snacks etc. in my youth.

You made one mistake though: the letters are much too neat, they are supposed to "dance" a little to look authentic ;) ;) ;)

Love it !

thx for those links, etienne, but we need bigger ones :o. since i can't remember how those letter boards are set up, i was wondering whether it is possible to make them myself. PLUS i'd also like to know what the correct / official term for them in german is. can't come up with one which provides a positive result on ebay germany!

They where very common here in holland, every bar and cafetaria almost had these for the prices of theyre products
I remember also the public swimmingpool where we used to hang out had these

Anyway for your questions..

I know they are made from rubber, and the letters they still sell separate

The label of the letters is "LegaMaster"  maybe this helps your search

looks custom-made. i could ask my friend Jochen Hippel to write a software like this if there is a demand.
I would certainly love to use it in my basement... Would be cool to include the database from Twin Galaxies and the possibility to upload your scores to a database on a server.
What do you think?

Wow that would rocks! I'm sure many game room owners around the globe would love to have something like this.
I'm not really up to include Twin Galaxies scores, because all of them are unreachable for 'usual' players. It could be a nice addition for sure, but my goal is to keep hi-scores done inside the Nuno's Lair.

It could be a nice addition for sure, but my goal is to keep hi-scores done inside the Nuno's Lair.

it would be an option. :) but the more i think about it... the more i like the idea of doing this for local arcade owners.

what do you think about the following:

you choose or create a list of your arcades. you take the marquees or the pictures of the cab... you can also upload your arcade logo or display it as text.
you could choose your background, your text-font, the size... pretty much anything should be ready for costomization.

if you enter the scores it will record the date and the location. you can also include a picture. this alone would be nice.

now comes another part which would make it even cooler: tournaments!

you pick a number of games in your arcade for your the tournament and you enter the people taking part. now we could calculate the scores for each machine and for the complete competition. it could save competitions, results and put high scores in the table.

what do you think of this?

Here's my input  :)

- display at least the five bests score for each game (name  / score / date)
- having a simple interface to input new scores, that will automatically update the scoreboard display
- Using a picture (marquee) for each game as title, like this

- For those of us who owns a 'certain amount' of cabinets  ;D, the program should automatically and smoothly switch between pages
- I use to track hi score *twice* for certain game like Starblade. Scores done with one credit, but also with three credits. So having a field somewhere to indicate this?

I have seen that scoreboard and touch screen display during my visit at funspot last year.
maybe they can help you to find the source of this.

Well... I really tried to find something that fully matches my needs... but nothing really usable found yet!  :-\

So in that case, there's only one solution : DO IT YOURSELF  ;)
Thanks for the CSS/PHP learning I recently had to do while building an other website (www.dariusburstex.com), I now can figure out how to set up the high scores board I always have in mind...
With some hints here & there, but also by learning enough php/sql language to do basic queries, I'm now almost done with this project  :)

Here's the specifications :

- the board displays the three best scores for each game, unique per player. So if the same player has many scores registered for the same game, only his best score will be written, so in order to avoid having written the same name multiple time per game...
- the board main screen can be resized, in order to fit any TV, any resolution and also vertical TV mount (but not specifically on mobile devices who tend to zoom in/out in a strange way sometime...)
- during the scrooling of the scores, you can move up/down the screen, this won't break the 'loop'
- you can have the same game multiple time on screen, and add specific comment like '1 credit/no continue' and 'unlimited credit', or any comment you would need...
- everything can be configured : more scores per game, the display order of the games can be selected, you can hide or remove any game, this won't alter the design, the speed of the scrooling speed, the pause...

It's funny because I worked on that project off line first, but finally made an on-line version. Here's an alpha version, which is 'tuned' for my resolution/display, so it may have the scrooling too fast/slow, or the reload screen to fast for you on your setup, but this will give you an idea. Have a look right here (CLICK ME) (http://www.dariusburstex.com/NunoHighScore/highscore.php), and do not hesitate to resize your browser to see what I mean...

Speaking of my setup, I'm using a second hand 32" full hd TV, now inside my game room

32" is a very good size for this

Because the score board is ONLINE, I'm using a PS3 (yes a Sony PS3 ;D) that use the wifi of my game room to access the url and display in full screen the score on my 32" display... and voilà  ;D
But of course I could be used with a simple computer, an appleTV or better, a wifi connected TV and in that case, no need anything else... the TV will go to the url and do the job all alone!  :) In short, any device that can use an internet browser...

Now I'm working on an on-line form that will allow me to update score from an Ipad or anything else, in real time! It means that when someone will do a score in the game room, I'll update it in no time and it will be display immediately on the screen!  :)
I also have to work on the general design, size of the fonts, the colors... but... I'm already very happy with this alpha version to be honest!
And having this thing working push me to score in order to flll these empty spaces... to bad I didn't keep track of high scores done by the visitors in the past, but this gonna change starting from now!  ;D
